Precautions We are Taking at DCI

Updated: 15 May 2020

Sincere thanks from our heart to everyone for your continued support, patience, kindness and practice.

The NZ Government announced that from 14 May NZ will be at Alert Level 2 with certain restrictions – including a limit of 10 persons for religious gatherings and also attendees to be seated 1 metre apart (which naturally limits how many DCI’s Gompa and Library space can accommodate at Level 2).

In light of all of this, DCI’s Geshe, director, trustees and spiritual program coordinator have agreed to take a measured approach to reopening. This will importantly allow time for the results of Level 3 and Level 2 to become manifest. Therefore:

  • From 20 May DCI’s outdoor stupa will open for circumambulation from 9am – 6pm daily – COVID precautions apply. (If you or someone in your family is at all sick, please stay home.)
  • However, the rest of the facilities (prayer wheel room, meditation hall, etc.) and grounds will not yet open to the public.
  • Classes will continue via audio recordings.
  • Regular pujas and daily practice sessions will continue to be sponsorable.
  • The earliest DCI would consider restarting in-person classes would be mid-June if the conditions are good.

We will continue to monitor the situation.

In the meantime, we wish you and your family a safe, good and compassionate transition to the “new normal.”

We are committed to continuing to make the wonderful tools and teachings of the Buddhadharma available for you to enjoy and benefit from.

May our collective efforts to study, reflect and meditate on the Buddha’s teachings, and especially to integrate compassion and wisdom into our own lives, offer great benefit to all sentient beings!

Lama Zopa Rinpoche's Practice Advice

Lama Zopa Rinpoche has advised certain prayers and mantras that one can do to help protect oneself and others from the Coronavirus, as well as to help stop the spread of the virus. Rinpoche is also giving teachings at Kopan during the lockdown and these videos are available at the links below. Rinpoche’s practices are being done daily at Dorje Chang Institute and offerings and dedications can be sponsored. These practices can also be done individually.

Here are the resources:

Daily Practice of these at DCI

These practices are being done daily at Dorje Chang Institute. As the centre is closed to the public – students and visitors – you are welcome to do the practices at home and welcome to sponsor offerings and dedications for the practices done at the centre. To help those who are doing the practices at home you can request an audio recording of the latest updated Coronavirus Practices at DCI: click here to request.

Sponsorship Opportunities

This advice from Rinpoche is done daily at DCI.

Sponsorship opportunities include:

  • Sponsor offerings
  • Sponsor dedication prayers

  • Sponsor the purchase of extra sanitation supplies at DCI to help at this time (masks, handsoap, disinfectant, paper towels, paper cups, individually wrapped tea/coffee/sugar, etc.)

“If you want others to be happy,
practice compassion.

If you want to be happy,
practice compassion.

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others.
And if you can’t help them,
at least don’t hurt them.”

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
